MI5: Iran plotted 10 separate kidnappings
At least ten persons in Britain or the United Kingdom have been targeted by kidnapping or assassination threats from Iran this year. The chief of MI5, Ken McCallum, announced the number in his yearly briefing on risks confronting the UK. UK "must be ready for Russian assault for years to come," Mr. McCallum said. However, he said that Russia's invasion of Ukraine had resulted in a strategic loss because of the widespread expulsion of Russian agents across the globe. Mr. McCallum told a crowd inside Thames House, the security service's London headquarters, "No one should be under any delusion about the extent and range of the challenges we face in 2022). Threats from other governments that are "not timid about the measures they use," he cautioned, were the most significant change his agency was experiencing. He said that Iran's "aggressive intelligence agencies" were responsible for projecting "direct" threats into the United Kingdom. He stated this included plans to abduct or possibly assassinate Britons or persons residing in the UK who were seen as adversaries of the government. Since January, "we have observed at least 10 such possible threats," he said. This past week, news broke that Iranian journalists working in the UK had been sent death threats. Mr. McCallum said that MI5 has been collaborating with domestic and foreign partners to disrupt what he termed "absolutely reprehensible behaviour." Although he was unable to go into specifics, he did say that Iran has used both its own spies and others to act on their behalf, utilising a variety of strategies, including both covert operations inside Western nations and overt attempts to attract individuals back to Iran.…
